We love them like they’re family, treat them like best friends and sometimes we dress them better than we dress ourselves! Our pets are important to us, especially when it comes to their health. Sure, they are up-to-date on vaccinations and get regular check-ups with their veterinarian, but did you know some of the most dangerous things to them could be found in your backyard? Cats and dogs love to venture around our yards and parks but the plants there could be bad for their health. Arm yourself with knowledge as we list 8 plants that are harmful to your pets.

Aloe Vera

Known primarily for treating weekend, beach-going sunburns, Aloe Vera is actually toxic to cats and dogs! Many people keep Aloe plants in their yards as a natural burn relief or disinfectant among other things, but cats and dogs need to be kept away from this plant. Useful to humans, but one of the plants that are harmful to your pets.

Symptoms: Diarrhea, depression, vomiting, anorexia, tremors, discolored urine.

This beautifully colored plant is popular in gardens, but is extremely harmful to your pets. Not only cats and dogs, but horses, goats and sheep as well. It is so dangerous, in fact, that simply ingesting a few leaves can create serious health problems. If your pet has ingested any part of this plant and symptoms go unattended, your pet could become comatose or die.

Symptoms: Digestive issues, excessive drooling, frequent diarrhea, depression, loss of coordination, loss of appetite, weak heart rate and leg paralysis.

Castor Bean

Not a commonly known plant in gardens, but castor bean is a popular landscaping plant. Your pet could come across it while on outings in parks or other public spaces. Any symptoms that go unattended could lead to death.

Symptoms: Drooling, abdominal pain, excessive thirst, weakness, loss of appetite, muscle twitching and seizures.

Daffodils are gorgeous flowers popular in the spring, but the bulbs are toxic if ingested by your pets.

Symptoms: Diarrhea, low blood pressure, vomiting, tremors and cardiac arrhythmias.

Famous for their fragrance, but dangerous to cats! Even small portions of this flower can be dangerous if ingested by your feline friend, although they are not dangerous to dogs.

Symptoms: Kidney Failure.

Sago Palm

Temperate regions, like Florida, are home to the Sago Palm and are seen quite commonly. They are popular with public landscaping, but can still be found in neighborhood yards. The hardest part about having this plant around your pets is that they find it very tasty. Every part of the Sago Palm is toxic, but the seeds are extremely toxic! This is a prime example of plants that are harmful to your pets.

Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, abnormal fluid accumulation in the abdomen, abdominal pain, jaundice and black-tarry stool

Tomato Plant

Freshly picked tomatoes are very appealing to the home gardeners, but yes, this plant is harmful to your pets. Tomato plants will most likely not be lethal, but they will provide a lot of discomfort.

Symptoms: Hypersalivation, loss of appetite, severe gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, drowsiness, depression, confusion, behavioral change, slow heart rate and weakness.

The bulb of the tulip has a very high concentration of toxins. So if you have a dog that likes to dig, be mindful of what they’re excavating because these are harmful to your pets.

Symptoms: Drooling, gastrointestinal irritation, loss of appetite, depression of the central nervous system, cardiac abnormalities and convulsions.

In the end, always remember to visit your local veterinarian for concerning issues and persistent symptoms. There are lots of plants that are harmful to your pets not on our list.
