St. Cloud is a medium sized city in northern Osceola County, Florida. The city is made up of 13 neighborhoods and is the 84th largest community in the state of Florida. It is approximately 25 miles from Orlando and is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida Metropolitan Area. The city motto is “Celebrating Small Town Life.” It has a mixed workforce, a council/manager style of government and is a somewhat ethnically diverse community. Public education is provided by the Osceola County School District. Local schools include, but are not limited to Harmony Community School, Hickory Tree Elementary, Harmony High School and the Osceola Center for Early Learning. The play Sweet Bird of Youth is set in St. Cloud and two films have been shot using locations within St. Cloud, Two Thousand Maniacs! and The Waterboy.

Hamilton Disston began developing the area that would one day be St. Cloud in the 1870s. Disston drained swamps and dug canals and in 1886 and 1887 he established a sugarcane plantation and named it after St. Cloud Minnesota. Disston opened the Sugar Belt Railway in 1888 which later merged into the South Florida Railroad. The area remained rural, but in 1909, the Seminole Land & Investment Company chose 35,000 acres for the as the site of a retirement community for Civil War veterans. Due to this history the city still bears the nickname “Soldier City.” Today the city separates itself from the surrounding hustle and bustle of theme parks and tourist destinations by embracing and promoting it’s its small town nature.

The city spans 18.065 square miles virtually all land area with a mere .11 square miles of water area. In 2000, the population was 20,074 and the median household income was $36,467. By 2010, the population had risen to 35,183 and in 2013 the population was 40,918. In the same year, the estimated median household income was $46,198, the estimated per capita was $19,265, the estimated median house or condo value was $127,536, the mean housing price was $123,156 and the median gross rent was $1,048.

The beautiful community of St. Cloud has several parks and recreation facilities like the Civic Center Complex, Hopkins Park, Peghorn Nature Park, Veteran’s Park and many more. It also has a variety of interesting sites like Reptile World Serpentarium and the St. Cloud Heritage Museum.
